THE FORK
Synopsis and Scenes
Our show opens with a brief look at life for people in
the “roaring twenties” through the Great Depression
(OVERTURE).
The year is now 1938: Germany. A large gathering of
young people, the “Ants,” dressed in brown clothing
start to chant (SEIG HIEL). Their hero/idol/leader,
ascends from below, and addresses his followers. He
is called Lither (MAN FROM HELL). As the years pass
(’38-’43), he screams out threatening speeches,
invades countries, and gathers more power and
terrorizes the people of each country (REVENGE).
1943: In a train station in Ontario, John, a high
school student, is about to board a train to go and
fight the war. Enid, his girlfriend, stalls him for a
few moments to say a last good-bye, at the same time
asking him to stay. John says he’ll never forget her
“over there,” and he’ll return “in September”. They
look towards the future (MAY DAY). John gets on the
train, and vanishes from Enid’s sight (TRAIN OF LOST
SOULS)
Finally, John arrives at a ship and meets the
Canadian Army. He meets a fellow high school buddy,
Foxx. Foxx and John poke fun at the whole war
situation, much to the delight of the other boys, who
join in the fun (ARMY LIFE). The mood takes a dark
turn when the boys are loaded onto the ship and sent
overseas. Foxx seems to be disenchanted about the
whole thing, and he sings his displeasure to the
others (OVER THE OCEAN).
Summer 1944. Enid looks out of her window, as
if
she’s looking into her future. She no longer sees
John with her, as she no longer loves him. She’s
looking for freedom (NORTHWIND).
The Ants, with Lither continue to wreak havoc on the
people. The “Ants” seem to be slaves to their leader,
as he cracks a whip. As the song reaches a crescendo,
we see John and Foxx observing the carnage from far
away. Foxx rips the Lither flag to shreds, and John
spits on it. (THE ANT’S THEME)
As Act Two opens, it is now 1945. We see
the Army
getting ready for an upcoming battle, and various
other scenes (UNDERTURE). John manages to sneak away
from the activities, and wonders through his thoughts,
(THE FORK). The sun rises over the battlefields, and
the Army and The “Ants” (urged by the whip of Lither)
prepare for battle (INTO ACTION). During (FIRST
ATTACK), The “Ants” catch the Army by surprise.
During the violence, the Ants capture Foxx. As Foxx
sits in a P.O.W. camp, he comments on what war really
is in his eyes: a sham. John, loses himself in
thought again, and imagines himself standing amongst
the crosses of the men who fell during the First World
War. He scorns the men who lay beneath his feet, and
the men who are fighting now in World War Two (IN
FLANDER’S FIELDS). He plans to escape the war,
somehow... alive.
Another battle erupts (SECOND ATTACK); John is taken
captive by The “Ants,” and thrown into a crowded
barracks room with Foxx.
In the camp, John falls asleep. He dreams that he is
outside the Army base, and he sees Enid standing at
the train station. They both know that fate can never
allow them to get back together. They know that
they’ll find love somewhere else (HEARTSTRINGS). As
the sequence ends, John notices a dark figure in the
shadows behind Enid. He can’t tell what it is, as
Foxx awakens him.
Foxx tries to cheer John by telling him about his life
back home in Ontario. He tells John that isn’t as bad
as it seems, and they should return to it. John,
convinced that he can get back to Enid, decides to
help Foxx escape from the camp (SIXTEEN MEMORIES).
The boys manage to escape from the barracks, and exit
the camp. An alarm sounds, and the chase is on (THE
ESCAPE). Members of The “Ants” follow the two boys,
but the boys eventually lose them. As the tempo
increases, the boys see a field ahead of them. The
field is dense with fog, but the two are unafraid.
Foxx manages to get to safety, and calls to John to
hurry up. John doesn’t emerge. Foxx goes back to find
his friend. He almost doesn’t see a mutilated course.
He takes a second look at it, and realizes it’s
John’s body. Foxx can see that John has stepped on a
mine.
Foxx, in a rage, grieves for his friend, as the ghosts
of the Army and “Ants” appear (JOHNNY, I HARDLY KNEW
YE). The scene eventually moves to John’s funeral
back in Ontario. Enid, grips the Union Jack flag, and
looks at John’s body. As she says good-bye, the dark
figure from the fantasy sequence is revealed as Foxx.
They kiss. The end.
